Political strategist James Carville said that former PresidentJoe Bidenis one of the most tragic figures in modern American history because he refused to withdraw early enough from the election. "I cannot begin to express how tragic this is," Carville said onThursday's episodeof his podcast, "Politics War Room." "He's one of the most accomplished Americans" since World War II, Carville said, praising Biden's legacy in politics. "If you just look at what he did as chairman of the Judiciary, Foreign Relations, Vice President, President, and you look at the tragedies of his life and distress that he's exhibited, and he's a well-liked, very admirable person, and he made one colossal mistake, and the Democrats made a colossal mistake by going along with it." Credibility Crisis: When Cnn Criticized Questioning Biden's Mental Fitness "And that is staying in the race until July 21, 2024. And it breaks my heart," Carville added. "It's just so sad." Biden's pivotal decision to withdraw from the presidential race is facing renewed scrutiny in the media. CNN anchor Jake Tapper co-authored a new book, "Original Sin," on the efforts made by top aides and allies to hide the truth about the then-president's mental and physical health. Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) said during a recent interview that President Trump is looking to "exact vengeance" on Harvard University after the Department of Homeland Security (DHS)blockedthe Ivy League institution from enrolling foreign students. Raskin said on Friday night that the administration's move to rescind Harvard's Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) certification is "definitely unconstitutional because it was in retaliation for Harvard rejecting the last round of unconstitutional attacks on its autonomy." "When Donald Trump essentially said that the federal government of the United States was going to take over their admissions process, take over their faculty hiring process, take over their curriculum, Harvard just said, that's a bridge too far. No way," Raskin, the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, said during his Friday night appearance on CNN's "Erin Burnett OutFront" show. The Maryland Democrat, a Harvard Law School alumnus, argued Trump is "trying to exact vengeance and retaliation again by taking it out on 7,000 students from other countries, forcing them to completely change their plans, turning their lives upside down and stripping Harvard of a quarter of its students." The White House slammed Raskin on Saturday, stating Harvard is "facing the consequences" for its actions. "Jamie Raskin has zero credibility left after he's unsuccessfully launched one liberal hoax after another against President Trump," White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson told The Hill. "Harvard has turned into a hotbed for anti-American, anti-Semitic, pro-terrorist agitators that put American students at risk," she continued. "They've repeatedly failed to address the serious issues plaguing their campus, despite warnings, and now they're facing the consequences." DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, when announcing the foreign student ban, said the administration was holding the elite school accountable for "fostering violence," not doing enough to combat antisemitism and "coordinating with the Chinese Communist Party on its campus." The administration's task force for combating antisemitismsaidearlier this month that Harvard has "failed to confront the pervasive race discrimination and anti-Semitic harassment plaguing its campus." A Harvard University Police Department report,releasedin October last year, found that a number of hate crimes reported to law enforcement at the school doubled, going from five to 10 between 2022 and 2023. Noem said that because of the certification being revoked, international students will need to transfer to another school or they would risk jeopardizing their legal status in the U.S. Harvardfileda lawsuit Friday morning alleging the administration's actions violated the First Amendment. U.S. District Judge Allison Burroughsgranteda temporary restraining order hours later and set a hearing for May 29 to deliberate whether a longer pause is necessary. The White House said on Friday that the American people elected Trump, "not random local judges with their own liberal agenda –— to run the country." "These unelected judges have no right to stop the Trump Administration from exercising their rightful control over immigration policy and national security policy," Jackson previously said. Raskin characterized the administration's actions as a "completely lawless situation." "The administration doesn't get to control higher education in America and tell colleges and universities what to do. They don't get to control newspaper entities and TV networks the way Donald Trump has been trying to do," Raskin said Friday night. "And they don't get to control law firms or any other private entity, but they're trying to move us into an authoritarian situation, so he can continue to embark upon his corruption tour of the world." The Trump administration has gone back-and-forth with Harvard in recent months, terminating nearly $3 billion worth of federalgrantsas the presidentwarnsthe school that its tax-exempt status could be revoked. Adorned in his trademark "Make America Great Again" hat, Trump spoke to the 1,002-strong class for just under an hour. During his address, he lauded the United States Army as the "greatest and most powerful Army the world has ever known." Beyond this, he stated that he is the one responsible for the Army's might. "And I know because I rebuilt that army, and I rebuilt the military," Trump told the crowd.  "We rebuilt it like nobody has ever rebuilt it before in my first term." Trump went on to push his American-first ethos, saying: "We're getting rid of the distractions and we're focusing our military on its core mission: crushing America's adversaries, killing America's enemies, and defending our great American flag like it has never been defended before." In his rally-style speech, Trump celebrated the achievements of the students, while also lauding his own presidency—including his cracking down on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs. West Point has found itself in the center of the DEI-related pushback, especially related to the banning of books and educational programs that the Trump Administration says promote DEI. In February,West Point disbanded its Society of Black Engineers clubas well as multiple other clubs listed under "affinity" groups on the club directory. This followed Trump's Jan. 20Executive Ordertitled "Ending Radical And Wasteful Government DEI Programs And Preferencing" and a Jan. 21 Executive Order titled "Ending Illegal Discrimination and Restoring Merit-Based Opportunity." A subsequentJan. 29 instructionfrom Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth saw the announcement of a new task force."I direct the establishment of a multi-functional 'Restoring America's Fighting Force' task force charged with overseeing the Department's efforts to abolish DEI offices and any vestiges of such offices that subvert meritocracy, perpetuate unconstitutional discrimination, and promote radical ideologies related to systemic racism and gender fluidity," Hegseth said. Beyond clubs, West Point has reportedly purged work by diverse authors from its libraries and has removed discussions of systemic inequities from its classrooms, leading aWest Point professor toresign, saying: "I am ashamed to be associated with the academy in its current form." Trump addressed his DEI measures during his West Point commencement speech, saying he has "liberated our troops from divisive and demeaning political training." "There will be no more critical race theory or transgender for everybody, forced onto our brave men and women in uniform or on anybody else, for that matter, in this country," Trump said. "And promotions and appointments will not be based on politics or identity. They'll be based on merit…We're a merit-based country again." Trump claimed that his predecessor, former President Joe Biden, "subjected the armed forces to all manner of social projects"—something he says is no longer. The President's speech comes after he and Hegseth have firedmultiple senior military officerswho were known to endorse DEI efforts. The Trump Administration has also once againbanned transgender people from serving in the militaryand hasordered new physical standard testswhich will require the same standards for both men and women. AAA expects an estimated 45.1 million people to travel at least 50 miles from home between May 22 and May 26. "We're projecting an additional one million travelers this holiday weekend compared to 2019, which not only means we're exceeding pre-pandemic levels but also signals a very busy summer travel season ahead," notes Paula Twidale, Senior Vice President of AAA Travel. And in their travels, Americans are celebrating theTrump economy—and their freedom. Lower gas prices are just the start. "The average cost of a gallon of regular gasoline hovered around $3.13 nationwide, according to AAA, down from $3.59 a gallon on Memorial Day in 2024," Fox News reports. Had either the Biden or Harris tickets prevailed last November, those numbers could look quite different. The Biden administration's war on domestic energy, including the former president's ham-fisted approach to gas prices, only led to energy prices. And that was the point—the Democratic agenda includes driving up energy prices to force Americans into electric vehicles and into the kind of "low-carbon" lifestyle they never seem to adopt themselves. Americans made their feelings clear on the Democrats' "expect less" agenda last November—by returning President Donald Trump to the White House in what amounts to a modern landslide. And it's not just energy prices. On Tuesday, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics released the April inflation numbers, and the Trump economybeat expectations—delivering the lowest inflation rate since Joe Biden's first month in office. Leading up to the 2024 election, egg prices gained attention, following an outbreak of avian flu. Prices rose so high that they became a campaign issue. When prices remained high after the election, Democrats sought to blame Trump. Now, however, the price of eggs really is falling. In April, they came down an average of 12.4%, the most since 1984. Similar proportions of Americans say they simply can no longer afford travelling (38%) or their circumstances have changed (37%)," the research group reported. But Americans areback on the roadand their outlook is positive. For his part, Steinbeck knew what the open road meant to Americans. "A journey is a person in itself; no two are alike. And all plans, safeguards, policing, and coercion are fruitless. We find after years of struggle that we do not take a trip; a trip takes us," he wrote.
